The Troop 221 Ceremonial Color Guard participates
in numerous community activities. Our boys have been on hand for
events ranging from high school football games to business-related
ground breakings with the governor of Virginia!
In the fall, our ceremonial team helps
kick off the home football games for our nearby high schools.
Since troop 221 scouts generally attend either Cave Spring or
Hidden Valley High Schools, our flag corps can be seen at the
opening of these home games. Boys in the color guard earn one
hour of service and, as a bonus, get to stick around and see the
game for free.
In the spring, our ceremonial team visits
Cub Scout Pack 221 to assist with the Arrow of Light and bridging
ceremony. This helps make a big impression for the boys who are
about to cross over into our troop.
Our ceremonial team has also served at the
Big Lick District Recognition Dinner, Camp Powhatan's Friday evening
retreat ceremony, and even with the 2002 groundbreaking of Carilion
Health System's new Mountain Pavilion. Governer Mark Warner was
on hand for that event, and the boys were able to meet our state's
top elected official!
The Troop 221 Ceremonial Team has multiple
purposes: it encourages scouts to understand the proper care and
display of our American flag; it provides an opportunity to advance
by earning service hours; and most importantly, it provides a
much-needed service to the community. We also believe these boys
are ambassadors of good will, helping to promote the Scouting
values of citizenship, service and honorable duty.
We encourage you to talk to Mr. Seidel (advisor)
and William A. (Scout Instructor) and volunteer for the team.
Future engagements will be announced – sometimes at a moments
notice – so be prepared when duty calls!
